Karzai: Afghanistan and India partnership is not directed against Pakistan
Afghan President Hamid Karzai said on Wednesday, that an agreement on strategic partnership between Afghanistan and India, signed the previous day, will not worsen relations between Kabul and Islamabad.
“Pakistan our twin brother, India a great friend. The agreement we signed with our friend will not affect our brother,” Karzai said in a speech on India-Afghanistan relations here.
“This strategic partnership is not directed against any country”, said the Afghan president.
An agreement on Strategic Partnership between India and Afghanistan was signed yesterday, on October 4, at the meeting of Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who is in India on a two-day visit.
The document provides assistance to India in training and arming of the Afghan army.
According to BBC, Islamabad, which considers neighboring Afghanistan to be an area of influence, takes rapidly strengthening relations between Kabul and New Delhi with suspicion.
A proposal on India’s participation in the creation of a new army in Afghanistan was first introduced six years ago, but only now New Delhi and Kabul have come to a final agreement on this issue.
The Army of Afghanistan requires modern training and education, as the armed forces of this country will soon have to fight against the armed opposition alone – after the foreign contingent troops will have left this country by 2014, commented Indian press.
Afghanistan has also declared its readiness to support the intention of India to get permanent membership of UN Security Council.
India and Afghanistan have also signed two partnership agreements in the mining area and in the production of hydrocarbons.
New Delhi is one of the main economic partners in Afghanistan – India earlier announced its readiness to invest more than two billion dollars in economic projects of Afghanistan.
Yesterday Karzai also accused the leadership of Pakistan that it was playing a double game against Taliban.
